Master of Nutrition Science and PolicyThe Master of Nutrition Science and Policy is a one-year academic program consisting of eight courses and a thesis conducted in three 13-week terms, consisting of a 10 day intensive residency period in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, with the remainder of each course taught using the latest distance learning methods and technologies. Building on the Friedman School's joint emphasis on both science and policy, the degree adds a new focus on nutrition and public health issues and challenges in the Gulf, Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member of the UAE and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) selected Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy to help fulfill his vision that RAK be the hub for education and health care. With its picturesque Al Hajjar Mountains and pristine ocean, and rich history dating back to 5,500-3,900 BC, RAK serves as a wonderful host site for the Master of Nutrition Science and Policy residency period. Current Course Offerings:HighlightsTufts University's Friedman School, a leader in nutrition science, policy, and research in interventions in areas related to chronic preventable disease, announces a partnership with Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, to bring continuing education seminars, certificate programs, and short courses for health care professionals in areas of present and growing concern to the Gulf States. Courses will address the immediate need in the UAE to prevent and treat obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease as well as nutritional deficiencies in at-risk populations. These offerings will also provide a conceptual framework for health professionals to understand future research in these important areas from the School on effective interventions among at-risk populations. Future programs on pediatric nutrition, food safety, and physical activity will provide needed training for persons in a wide range of professions such as health care, hospitality, physical fitness, and government service. Who Should Attend?Health care providers, health care administrators, and public health officials will benefit from participation. Programs will be especially valuable for physicians, nurses, nutritionists, related allied health care professionals, and food service and hotel/hospitality workers. Expert InstructionAll programs will feature Tufts University faculty in conjunction with local and other international experts. The portfolio of programs will be under the direction of Dr. Edward Saltzman, M.D., Chief of the Division of Clinical Nutrition at Tufts Medical Center. Learning ModalitiesFrom traditional in-person participation to innovative distance-learning methods, course content will be designed to maximize the learning experience. Programs will be offered in several formats, based on the material and audience. Many programs will be offered in Ras Al Khaimah, others will utilize electronic formats such as the Internet or will be available in CD or DVD format.
