The Ras Al Khaimah and Tufts University Partnership

Under the direction of His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, the RAK government's Investment and Development Office (IDO) created EDRAK, an agency charged with fulfilling the mission of establishing RAK as a hub for education and health care that will serve populations across the Gulf States and South Asia.

The Friedman School was selected to participate in three exciting new projects in collaboration with IDO. In addition to offerings in continuing professional education, Friedman School faculty are working with IDO to design a state-of-the-art Enhanced Nutrition and Wellness Centre, and is developing a graduate degree program in nutrition to be based in RAK which will utilize new technologies to offer courses anywhere in the world. These three projects will establish Ras Al Khaimah as the center for nutrition-related science, policy, interventions, treatment, and education in the Gulf and South Asia.

Tufts University's Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy—the only independent school of nutrition in the United State—is recognized among premier research universities and enjoys a global reputation for academic excellence. TheSchool's degree programs, which focus on issues such as famine and hunger, communication of nutrition information to the public, biological and molecular research, and training of nutrition professionals, are renowned for the application of scientific research to national and international policy. The Friedman School's partner institutions include Tufts Medical Center and the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, which for three decades has studied the relationship between nutrition and aging. Tufts research scientists work with federal agencies to establish the USDA Dietary Guidelines, the Dietary Reference Intakes, and other significant public policies.
